Tantrums and Tempests

Tantrums and Tempests is a collection of political and social commentary poetry that confronts the anger, injustice, and division shaping American society. Through passionate, often unflinching verse, Jessica examines the human cost of prejudice, discrimination, political extremism, violence, and indifference toward those who are most vulnerable. From LGBTQ+ rights and transgender visibility to racial injustice, sexual violence, gun violence, poverty, healthcare, and environmental destruction, these poems give voice to people too often ignored, marginalized, or silenced.

Drawing on the tensions of contemporary American life, Jessica challenges readers to look beyond their own experiences and privileges to recognize the realities faced by others. She questions the contradictions between America's professed ideals of freedom and equality and the suffering experienced by those denied those promises. With particular urgency, she addresses the harm caused by hateful rhetoric, the dangers of remaining silent in the face of injustice, and the consequences of treating human dignity as a matter of political convenience.

Yet beneath the collection's anger and frustration lies a persistent call for compassion, understanding, and collective responsibility. Jessica balances pointed criticism and biting satire with moments of vulnerability, grief, and hope, reminding readers that words can wound, but they can also inspire change. Her poems challenge the divisions between us and them, urging readers to listen to unfamiliar voices, stand alongside the marginalized, and imagine a more equitable and accepting society.

Ultimately, Tantrums and Tempests is both a protest against the injustices of its time and an invitation to participate in building something better. It asks what kind of America we want to leave behind and insists that meaningful change begins when individuals find the courage to speak, stand together, and refuse to let hatred have the final word.

Praise & Reviews

"Tantrums and Tempests is equal parts political commentary, wake-up call, and invitation to "Look at the world from the margins / If you truly want to see it." Jessica challenges her readers to really listen and see the harsh realities and disparities of today's American through new eyes. Unflinching and courageous, these poems reveal a country broken by bigotry. They are also a love song to those injured most by the ongoing violence of patriarchy, whiteness and privilege, and a clarion call to social action and change. "Now is the time / To stand up and say / No more and this ends now." I dare any reader not to come away from this collection unchanged and uninspired."

"Tantrums and Tempests is a collection that does not ask for permission, does not soften its edges, does not apologize for its rage. In an era when authoritarianism thrives on apathy, Jaymes' writing refuses indifference. It is not an easy book; nor should it be. It asks us to confront what we would rather ignore: the rot in our politics, the violence in our culture, the complicity in our silence. It asks us to feel anger without shame, to wield language as both weapon and balm. It asks us, finally, to stand."

—  Maya Benton

"Some poetry asks us to slow down, sit with an image, and discover meaning in what remains unsaid. Tantrums and Tempests takes a different approach. Jessica Jaymes wants to make sure we hear her. This collection of political and social commentary poetry is passionate, confrontational, occasionally funny, and deeply invested in the belief that silence in the face of injustice is itself a choice. Across its pages, Jaymes tackles LGBTQ+ rights, racism, sexual violence, political division, environmental destruction, gun violence, and the erosion of compassion in American public life."
